I Don’t Know What I Wore Today

21 JUN 2010 By Doug Richard

A couple of weeks ago I presented a School for Startups event in Ipswich. It went well and we got great feedback from the participants. After all, it tends to be the quality of the participants that makes the event work.

I received one unusual piece of feedback though which I would like to share with you.

“Fantastic !! Doug was so “normal” as a bloke, open, available and spot on. His trousers were a bit too long though, he kept on having to pull them up and I couldn’t quite make out his shoes!! Sorry, I was trained as a theatrical costumier, so I notice these things haha. But GREAT that he didnt “dress up”"

Well, Mary Bird, I’m not sure why you would feel a need to see my shoes, but I was wearing some. They are a pair of Tod’s moccasins that I like too much and like most men have worn near to death and if my wife had half a chance she would have thrown away a long time ago. So it’s probably better that you didn’t see them actually.

One way or another I’m not sure you completely appreciate what goes through men’s minds when we choose our clothes. So I have decided to attach the following disclaimer to all future events. I hope it helps:

“By attending this event you agree and understand that the person teaching you on stage all day today, Doug Richard, is a bloke. By this you also understand that blokes do not really really notice what they choose from their wardrobe on any given morning thus they cannot be held fully responsible for what they wear. Thus comments about colour coordination, length of trousers, choice of tie or shirt or any other sartorial consideration is unwarranted and not welcome. In fact the only warranty a Bloke will make is that the clothing is comfortable and there are no stains they can see when they are wearing the clothes themselves”

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

  1. Hi Doug

Guess that it takes allsorts to make this world and our lives special.

As for when I saw you at One Young World, you could have been wearing a sack, as what you said was what mattered, and was pretty damn good.

    Cheers

    Colin

  2. Fantastic, disclaimer! I have given a few talks in front of people in the past as well.. May be I should use the same disclaimer to avoid receiving feedback similar to this!

P.s – Doug I have been to some of your talks and what you say is far more important than what you wear! I am a firm believer in Substance over style and your talks are all about substance!

Good Luck in all your endeavors!

    Best Wishes

  3. Well, speak for yourself Doug. Being a bloke, I definitely notice every day what I wear. That said of course, doesn’t mean it improves my dress style whatsoever, I’m just aware I’m dressed badly ;p

..that said, thankfully I can safely say I’m unlikely ever to own moccasins ;)
