INTERVIEW

Emma Jones started her first business at the age of 27 after spending 5 years with global accountancy firm, Arthur Andersen. The company was started from a spare room in Manchester and successfully sold 2 years later to Tenon Group plc. It was this experience that provided the inspiration for Emma’s next venture.

Launched in January 2006, Enterprise Nation www.enterprisenation.com has become the most popular resource in the UK for anyone starting and growing a business from home. The site attracts over 100,000 unique visitors each month with fresh daily content, a home business video show, and chance to meet peers in the lively forums.

As well as the site, Enterprise Nation hosts the Home Business Awards and produces the annual Home Business Report. In 2009, Emma was responsible for the UK’s first ever Home Enterprise Day, held during Global Entrepreneurship Week; a chance to celebrate the millions of people who have turned a talent/hobby/skill into a way of making a living, and part of their home into a business HQ.

Emma supports hundreds of home businesses each year by profiling them on Enterprise Nation. As a result these businesses attract new contacts, more profile, and increased sales! I could link to all these home businesses I love but they are all there to see at www.enterprisenation.com

We asked Emma Jones who she admires and she said . . .

Martha Stewart – what a lady! I admire her focus and respect her business plan. How clever to build a company where you promote a product through your magazines, TV/radio show, website and make it available in one of the largest stores in the US. She has single-handedly built a major media company. That’s no mean feat.

Mark Dixon – this man started out with a hot dog stand and went on to launch Regus, now the world’s largest serviced office company with over 1000 business centres in 75 countries. His drive, energy, and passion for the business are clear to see. When there was a blip (US business faltered) he sorted the problem, got back on his feet, and back in control. It’s an inspiration to watch people like him perform.

We asked Emma what her next big push is, and she said . . .

There’s quite a bit happening in 2010. My second book will be published in May – it’s called ‘Working 5 to 9 – how to start a business in your spare time’ and is for anyone who wants to keep hold of the day job and build their business at nights and weekends. We’re also working on plans for a home business magazine (a print one!) and meet-ups for Enterprise Nation members who have known each other online for 4 years but never met. There’ll be another chance to get face-to-face at our annual conference on Friday 19th November and, each day in the lead up to that, we’ll continue to develop the site so it remains a vibrant, informative and friendly place.

I have a feeling it’s going to be a good year for home business!
